The short film Washed Away was created by artist Andrés Amador for the 2021 VTA Exhibit, 'Destruction of the Land, Destruction of the People.' It explores in particular the hydro mining that washed away whole hillsides, causing the destruction of both the land and the people.
In this short film groups of Tribe Members gathered to paint clay on boulders at the Yuba river, create natural items arrangements in the forest, paint clay on rocks, and place clay handprints on wooden boards in the gallery. The intention of this project was to create opportunities for the Tribe to create art together using the materials and locations important to them. The artworks that were created were left behind as a declaration of Nisenan presence. This film and project were created by Andrés Amador for VTA 2022.
Alluring visuals envelope the viewer while an original song composed and sung by Culture Bearer Shelly Covert sings the story of the 'Uba Seo and the Great Destruction, called the gold rush by others. The film seeks to inspire (re)connecting to Water in the way of the Ancestors by telling the true story of People and Place in the Native Nisenan language.
